What are Stress Fractures?

Stress fractures are tiny hairline breaks that can occur in the bones of the foot. They can be caused by overtraining or overuse, improper training habits or surfaces, improper shoes, flatfeet or other foot deformities and osteoporosis. These tiny breaks in the bones of the feet can lead to a complete break if left untreated.

Pain, swelling, redness and bruising can be signs of a stress fracture. The fracture can occur almost anywhere in the foot. X-rays and other studies are used to diagnose the stress fracture. Come see us as early as possible to start treatment and possibly shorten the recovery time. Possible treatments include rest and immobilization of the foot. In some cases, surgery may be required to stabilize the stress fracture or to repair a stress fracture that has progressed to a fracture.

Heel Stress Fracture Causes:

It is important to understand the causes of  stress fractures especially heel stress fracture. Some of the causes include:

  • High impact sports like gymnastics, distance running, basketball and football.
  • People who start sudden training while being at rest for long times. The muscles and bones are not use to the activity so the sudden pressure may cause the fracture.
  • Proper footwear is very important for avoiding any injury or fracture. Worn footwear add to the stress.
  • Weakness in bones and lack of vitamin D may lead to the stress fracture.

Preventions of Stress Fracture:

The best way to treat stress fractures are to prevent them from occurring in the first place. Prevention strategies include:

  • Don’t start any training suddenly. You must start your exercise routine slowly to avoid any sudden stress on your muscles and bones.
  • Footwear selection appropriate to the activity and your foot type is essential.

How are Stress fracture diagnosed?

Stress Fracture are diagnosed by using X-ray and MRI technologies. These tests provide accurate information to a physician regarding the nature and location of the fracture.

Stress Fracture Treatment:

Stress fracture heal if proper rest is taken. Immobilization is sometimes necessary in order to allow the fractures to heal. Anti-inflammatory drugs are also used to treat the fracture. In cases where the stress fracture has significantly progressed, surgery may be neccesary.
